East Midlands Euro MP takes lead in the fight against organised crime

Bill Newton Dunn, East Midlands Euro MP has been appointed rapporteur for the European Parliament for its scrutiny of the proposed EU law to improve the fight against international organised crime. Aiming at enhancing co-operation between member states, it encourages a more effective and joint approach in the fight against cross-border crime.

Bill said: "There are many crimes against which cross-border co-operation in Europe would be of great benefit such as cyber crime, drug trafficking, trafficking in women, children and illegal immigrants, money laundering, tobacco trafficking, car theft, currency forgery, counterfeit documents and counterfeit goods. But too many obstacles and lack of trust to such co-operation remain."

"This act will provide the Union with a powerful and ambitious instrument to combat organised crime more effectively.

The key to tackling these crimes is working together. Free movement is the cornerstone of the European Union. This freedom is exploited by professional criminal gangs who can cross borders while our national police forces cannot. Criminals cross borders, and so must the solutions."
