MEP WELCOMES PLANS TO SHELVE 'MADE IN EU' LABELLING

MEP for the East Midlands, Bill Newton Dunn, has welcomed news that the EU Commission no longer plans to introduce a compulsory 'made in the European Union' label.

The local Lib Dem Euro-MP said,

"There has been a lot of resistance to this idea from industry, so I am pleased that the Commission has taken these views on board during their consultation process. It is important to ensure that local producers in the East Midlands are able to promote their goods both within and beyond the EU.

"I want to see more of the EU getting it right with labelling things that are important to consumers, such as chemical and GM content, the social and environmental conditions under which goods are produced, and whether cosmetics have been tested on animals."
